When someone dials 999, you’ll be the calm and caring voice that helps save lives. Join East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) as an Emergency Medical Advisor (999 Call Handler) and start a career where every day you’ll make a real impact.
You’ll receive full training to handle emergency and urgent calls, guiding people through life-saving advice while dispatching help. After 12 months, you’ll progress to Emergency Medical Advisor Mentor (Band 4) supporting and developing new call handlers.
Salary includes an example average unsocial enhancement. Unsocial enhancements will vary month to month. Should you work an alternative shift pattern, unsocial hours enhancements may vary further.

What You’ll Do
- Answer 999 and urgent calls from the public and healthcare professionals
- Assess and prioritise calls using established clinical triage systems
- Provide essential, pre-arrival medical instructions to callers
- Work shifts (including nights, weekends, and public holidays) as part of a 24/7 team

The Ideal Candidate
About You
We’re looking for individuals who can stay calm under pressure, think quickly, and show empathy and professionalism in every interaction. You should have:
- Experience working in a fast-paced or high-pressure environment.
- Strong communication and IT skills.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A commitment to patient safety and high-quality service delivery.
Training
- 5 weeks of full-time classroom-based training, followed by approximately 8 mentored shifts.
- Some training may be virtual or off-site — please consider this before applying.
- Annual leave is restricted during the training period.
